(Term Expires: November 2026)

530-926-7510
The City of Mt. Shasta elects five City Council members, who are elected at large, meaning there are no specific districts in which a candidate runs for office. Each of these elected officials represents the entire constituency. Each elected official serves a four-year term. In addition to the five City Council members, the City Treasurer and City Clerk serve the community on an elected basis.

City Council Dynamics: The Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tem are selected and appointed each November by a majority vote of the five members of the City Council and serve a one-year term. The expiration of terms of office for the members of the City Council is staggered so as to prevent all five positions from coming up for election simultaneously.
City Council Protocols:  Download Protocols
Meeting Frequency: Mt. Shasta City Council meetings are held twice a month on the second and fourth Monday evenings. All meetings are open to the public.
Meeting Location/Time: Recreation and Parks District Lodge located at 1315 Nixon Road in Mt. Shasta at 5:30 p.m.

The regular meetings of the City Council are held the second Thursday of each month starting at 5:30 p.m.  Adjourned and special meetings may be held at times and dates selected by the Council.
Meetings are held in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 550 Main Street, Weed, California.

The City Council is the legislative body of the City government and is composed of five Council Members elected for overlapping four-year terms.  The City Council is responsible for formulating policies for the City and approving major actions.  The Council Members choose one of their Members to serve as Mayor for a one-year term.  The Mayor presides over meetings of the Council, and votes as a Member of the Council, but has no veto power.  The Mayor represents the City government in all official and ceremonial matters.

Committee meetings, inspection trips, and informal conferences may be required so that Members are completely informed on the many issues that come before them. Council Members regularly meet with other officials of federal, state, and other local governments and organizations regarding matters of concern to municipal government.

FPPC
The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) of California prohibits a public official from using his or her official position to influence a governmental decision in which he or she knows or has reason to know he or she has a financial interest (Gov. Code Section 87100).  To help identify potential conflicts of interest, the law requires officials to file forms called Statements of Economic Interest (SEIs), also known as Form 700s.  This form is also called the Conflict of Interest Form.  Copies of the statements of economic interest filed by the above-named officers may be obtained by visiting the office of the City Clerk, or in some cases, available through the California Fair Political Practices Commission in electronic format.

The citizens of Weed are welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings of the City Council.  For those who cannot participate in person, meetings are broadcast by 22nd Avenue Broadcast Logistics at www.22ave.tv/weed.

Government:
The City of Tulelake was incorporated in 1937 and is a municipality. A municipal government is the lowest level of government and exercises authority over a municipality, which can be a city or town.

Tulelake has a council consisting of five people. Council members are elected positions that are voted on by the people in the general election. The mayor is chosen from among the five council members by the council. Each council member has a four year term. The council oversees the general administration, makes policy, sets budgets and passes laws called ordinances. Council appoints professional people to carry out day to day administrative operations. Tulelake City Council Meetings are held at City Hall, located at 591 Main Street, on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 5:30 pm. Agendas are posted on the front door of City Hall or you can find them posted on our website under Agendas & Minutes

A municipal government is in charge of the infrastructure and safety of the people that live within the municipality. The responsibilities may include, but are not limited to building and maintaining roads; overseeing water and sewer systems; providing or overseeing law enforcement, fire and hazard protection, public health and safety services; and collecting the taxes to pay for these services. Depending on the municipality, many other types of services can also be provided.
